Frequently Asked Questions
What is the server.properties file in Minecraft?
server.properties is the main configuration file for a Minecraft Java Edition server. It controls game mode, difficulty, player limits, MOTD, world name, PvP, whitelist, and more. It is located in the root folder of your server.
What game modes can I set in server.properties?
Minecraft supports four game modes: survival (gather resources, fight mobs), creative (unlimited resources, flight), adventure (restricted block breaking), and spectator (observe without interacting). The default is survival.
What does online-mode=true mean?
With online-mode=true, the server authenticates players with Mojang's servers — only valid Minecraft accounts can join. Setting it to false allows unofficial (cracked) accounts but is generally not recommended for security.
What is view-distance and how does it affect performance?
view-distance controls how many chunks around each player are loaded. Higher values (10-32) give better visibility but use more RAM and CPU. For servers with limited memory, reducing it to 6-8 can significantly improve performance and TPS.
Do I need to restart the server after editing server.properties?
Yes. server.properties changes only take effect when the server restarts. Save the file and do a full server restart to apply your new settings.
